Instow beach - Young Devon project
These images are from a series of workshops based on photography and photographing the landscape, which introduced young people to their local playground - the geology, wildlife, sea, beaches and walking trails / paths. The idea was for participants to gain confidence in being outdoors, through photography, to learn about a new or forgotten place / space, ignite enthusiasm for and nurture a caring for the natural environment through exploration.
Artists who are members of Bideford Bay Creatives worked with young people from Young Devon in Bideford. They all braved the winter weather to get outside and take photographs in Instow at night. We 'Painted with Light' using coloured torches and cameras taking long exposures. The rain persisted and some photos were taken in the bus shelter as well as on the beach, this is where the 'Young Devon' was 'painted' with the torches and was a group effort with lots of arm waving for 3 minutes to form the letters!
This project has been funded by the North Devon Coast AONB Sustainable Development Fund.

I think this image of 'Young Devon' in lights is great - it really conveys what the workshop was all about, painting with light! The colours are fab and it has such a vibrancy about it. It was a fun evening in the rain.
