Top 5 of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe

From the rugged cliffs of Cornwall to the sandy beaches of Spain, or the dramatic coastlines in southwest Portugal or the beaches throughout Malta, there are many breathtakingly beautiful coastal landscapes throughout Europe.

But which ones are the most beautiful?

Since we travel to Europe a decade ago, we fell in love with it’s coastlines! Our first “Wow!” moment was in our first trip to Malta.

The coastline of Malta has some beautiful beaches which are well worth visiting. The most popular beach is St Julian’s Bay. It is located on the south coast of Malta and is one of the best known tourist destinations in Malta. The bay stretches for about 7 km from north to south and 3 km from east to west. The beach is surrounded by cliffs and rocky outcrops. The beach is sandy and there are several small bays along its length. The water is clear blue and the sea temperature ranges between 18°C and 24°C.

Did you knew that this was the main reason for us to decide to apply for a Malta permanent residency program and settle in Europe? The great part is that we didn’t need to stay on a permanent basis there, and it allowed us to take the advantages of a Malta visa to travel around Europe.

And that’s when we had the chance to see in loco, the next 5 Europe Coastlines, which in our opinion are the top 5 across the “old continent”. It’s true that there are plenty more. However, we wanted to narrow down our search to just a handful of coastlines. So let’s take a look at some of the most beautiful European coastlines.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

A 50-kilometer stretch of Italian coastline along the Sorrento peninsula, the Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful and romantic places on the Italian coast. And that’s a lot for a country full of attractions.  Punctuated by beautiful villages like Positano and Ravello, the Amalfi Coast has roads that zigzag between hills and cliffs that meet the Mediterranean, with all the charm and glamour of southern Italy.

San Sebastian, Spain

The road from Bilbao to San Sebastian along the Basque coast has spectacular sea views, with countryside and cliffs meeting the ocean. Upon arriving in San Sebastian, visitors find one of the most beautiful coastal cities in Europe, with ancient buildings, gothic churches, and beaches such as Playa de la Concha.

Cinque Terre, Italy

The Cinque Terre region is made up of the villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore on Italy’s northern coast. The beauty of these medieval villages situated on cliffs by the sea combines perfectly with the landscapes to create a unique and very romantic setting.

Côte d’ Azur, France

The Côte d’Azur stretches from the towns of Cassis to Menton on France’s southeastern coast, passing through such mythical places as Saint-Tropez, Monaco, Nice, and Cannes, home of the famous film festival. Also known as the French Riviera, the Côte d’Azur has beautiful beaches with the blue waters of the Mediterranean collaborating with its postcard. Completing the menu is the characteristic glamour and luxury, with millionaires from all over the world in their mansions and with exclusive brand cars.

Algarve, Portugal

The south of Portugal is one of the main natural attractions of the country. Despite not being on the list of Condé Nast Traveler magazine, I believe that Algarve could not be left out. The beautiful beaches and the golden cliffs, that sometimes emerge from the emerald green sea, are a spectacle in themselves. Recently the Falésia beach in Albufeira was elected one of the most beautiful in the world by TripAdvisor users.
